Business Central 2024 Wave 2: Innovations in service and projects

With the release of the latest Business Central version, the functionalities in the project and service area have once again been optimized and expanded.

In addition to improved user-friendliness in service and project management, orders can now be created directly from a project. Warehouses with directed put-away and pick can also be used with projects.

Replenish items for projects

With the current Dynamics 365 Business Central version, it is now quick and easy to ensure that the required items are available for the start of a new project or for the smooth running of an existing project. Orders for the items can be created on the “Project Card” page by selecting the “Create Purchase Order” action. The purchase orders can then be checked, edited and sent to the vendors.

The function for creating purchase orders from projects is similar to the functions already familiar from the sales area. The process can be used to create purchase orders directly from a project. The same algorithm is used as for the “Order Planning” worksheet. This means that no complex setup is required for the creation and that the process is able to analyze supply and demand for required items.

Improved usability in service and project management

The usability of several areas in project and service management has also been improved again with the latest Business Central version. To speed up access to information for both projects and services, fields and actions have been added to several pages. This simplifies the completion of multiple business processes in project and service management.

For example, to speed up the process of creating invoices for projects, the “Create Project Sales Invoice” action has been added to the “Project Card” page. This means that invoices can now be created without having to leave the project information. In addition, some actions have been added to the “Project List” page to speed up access to and work with project details:

• Assembly Orders
• Put-away, Pick and Movement Lines
• Registered Pick Lines
• Project WIP Cockpit

Use directed put-away and pick warehouses with projects

From now on, you can also use locations configured for directed flows with projects to support an effective warehouse flow and manage project-related inventory.

In companies, items are picked before they are consumed in different ways. The exact process depends on the warehouse configuration. If either a default “Location Code” is to be specified on the “Project” page and in the “Project Task Lines” subform or a “Location Code” is to be entered under “Project Planning Lines”, Business Central now also allows the use of locations for which the “Directed Put-Away and Pick” toggle is activated.

The “Create Warehouse Pick” action can now be used to create or register a pick document under the following conditions:

• The status of the project is “Open”.
• The line type of the project planning line is “Budget” or “Both Budget and Billable”.
• The type of the project planning line is “Item”.
• The option Project Consump. Whse. Handling is set to “Warehouse Pick (mandatory)”. This setting is now available when “Directed Pick and Put-Away” is selected.

Warehouse picks can also be created using a pick worksheet. The pick worksheet can be used to organize pick information before pick instructions are created. The “To Project Bin Code” field on the “Location Card” page must be completed.

The “Project No.” and “Project Task No.” fields cannot be used together in the purchase order if the “Directed Put-Away and Pick” toggle is activated. Receipts and consumption must be posted separately with the fully directed warehouse flow.
