With the latest spring release, Dynamics 365 Business Central has once again received a number of performance optimizations. As part of this, FlowFields have also been improved.
Since the release of the current version, FlowFields in Business Central are only calculated when they are displayed on the page thanks to the “Calculate only visible FlowFields” function. FlowFields are dynamically calculated fields such as totals or counts, which were previously always calculated in the background.

If a FlowField is added to a page or page extension and visibility is disabled, the FlowField will not be displayed on the page. The AL runtime will continue to calculate the value, resulting in unnecessary calculations and performance issues. Administrators can avoid this by enabling the “Calculate only visible FlowFields” feature via feature management. When this option is enabled, the AL runtime only calculates values for FlowFields that are visible on pages.
The new feature thus reduces irrelevant calculations, which results in loading pages faster, improving overall efficiency and performance. Activating this feature therefore leads to lower and more manageable resource consumption, as well as more responsive and overall optimized work with Business Central.
